Memphis 901 FC Signs Defender Todd Pratzner

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC Sporting Director Andrew Bell and head coach Tim Mulqueen announced today the eleventh signing for the team’s inaugural 2019 United Soccer League season, with defender Todd Pratzner the latest to join the roster pending league and federation approval.

Pratzner, a defender, has spent the past two seasons in the USL with Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC in 2018 and the Rochester Rhinos in 2017. He started 17 matches this past season with Pittsburgh and made 13 appearances with 10 starts with Rochester the season before. He started both of the Rhinos’ playoff games and finished fourth on the team with 41 clearances.

“Todd is a player I have liked for a couple of years now,” Bell said. “He enjoys defending, and his work ethic will fit in well with the Club culture we are building in Memphis.”

“Todd is a very good and experienced central defender,” Mulqueen said. “He joins us from a winning culture, and we look forward to him bringing those winning attributes to Memphis. Todd is another member of the team who has a tremendous thirst for work, and he will push the group forward.”

Prior to beginning his professional career, Pratzner played collegiately at Xavier University from 2013-16. He amassed 71 games played with 70 starts, four goals, and one assist while holding down the backline during his four seasons. He was named to the BIG EAST Conference All-Tournament Team as a junior, in addition to anchoring a defensive unit that set school records for shutouts (11) and team goals-against average (0.84) as a sophomore.

Memphis 901 FC Goes Global with Latest Signings

Trinidad & Tobago National Team members Triston Hodge and Leston Paul and Jamaican National Team player Ewan Grandison are the latest to sport Memphis 901 FC’s crest as its inaugural 2019 United Soccer League campaign approaches.

Hodge arrives on loan from W Connection F.C., now a six-time champion of the TT Pro League, which is the top league in Trinidad & Tobago. Paul and Grandison’s Central F.C. battled Hodge and W Connection for the top spot in the league this season.

“W Connection and Central F.C. are two of the elite Clubs of the Caribbean, and we are fortunate to be able to add several of their top players to our team,” Memphis 901 FC Sporting Director Andrew Bell said. “Triston, Leston, and Ewan have all won domestic trophies and have also competed over several years in the CONCACAF Champions League. In addition, all three players have considerable international experience playing for their respective countries at the highest level.

“These are strong additions to the squad, and we look forward to welcoming them to Memphis.”

Grandison and Paul play in the midfield, and Hodge is a defender. Pending league and federation approval, they will join defender Louis Bennett, defender Wes Charpie, forward Heviel Cordovés, midfielder Raul Gonzalez, midfielder Dan Metzger, defender Josh Morton, and forward Luca Uccello on the team’s 2019 roster.

“We are so excited to have secured the services of Ewan, Triston, and Leston,” Memphis 901 FC head coach Tim Mulqueen said. “It’s a very important statement for our Club and the City of Memphis to attract three Full Senior International Players in our first year of existence. These players have tremendous experience in massive games for their respective countries that will be invaluable to our Club. They will also be great members of the Memphis community.”

The trio is no stranger to the game’s biggest moments.

Hodge and Paul played in Trinidad & Tobago’s 2-1 win over the United States in World Cup qualifying in 2017, and Paul led Central F.C. to three TT Pro League titles in addition to playing on back-to-back Caribbean Club Championship squads. Grandison adds multiple appearances in Caribbean Cup qualifiers.

They will fit right in with their new Memphis 901 FC teammates.

Paul played collegiately at the University of South Florida, where he was a captain and teammates with Charpie. Hodge, Charpie, and Uccello were also teammates previously with Toronto FC II.

And the group has played under men who know the game on an intimate level. W Connection F.C. is led by Stuart Charles-Fevrier, who has now won six TT Pro League titles and numerous other league championships, and Central F.C. is coached by former MLS Scoring Champion Stern John and led by World Cup participant Brent Sancho.

Sancho played professionally in the United States, Finland, Scotland, and England and suited up for his native Trinidad & Tobago over 50 times. He also played in the 2006 World Cup, before being named T&T’s Minister of Sport in 2015. John had a nearly 20-year playing career and was MLS’ leading goal-scorer in 1998, before teaming with Sancho on T&T’s 2006 World Cup squad.

Memphis 901 FC Inks USL Veteran Heviel Cordovs

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC Sporting Director Andrew Bell and head coach Tim Mulqueen announced today the seventh signing for the team’s inaugural 2019 United Soccer League season, with forward Heviel Cordovés the latest to join the roster pending league and federation approval.

Cordovés joins defender Louis Bennett, defender Wes Charpie, midfielder Raul Gonzalez, midfielder Dan Metzger, defender Josh Morton, and forward Luca Uccello on the Memphis 901 FC roster.

“Heviel is a player I’ve known since he defected to the US in 2012,” Bell explained. “He adds a strong attacking pedigree to the squad and is another positive addition as we continue to build out the team in preparation for the start of the USL Championship season next March.”

“Heviel is a proven goal scorer in the USL,” Mulqueen said. “His veteran leadership and experience will be very important to us in our play this year. It’s exciting to add a player of his caliber to our existing roster.”

Cordovés spent the 2018 season with the Richmond Kickers, where he connected for seven goals in 24 matches. Prior to joining Richmond, he spent five seasons with the Charleston Battery and scored 28 goals in 127 matches.

The Havana, Cuba native joined the Battery after defecting to the United States during a Cuban National Team trip to Toronto for a World Cup qualifier in October 2012. He suited up for the National Team nine times from 2008-12, and he made his international debut in an August 2008 World Cup qualification match against Trinidad and Tobago. Cordovés also played for Cuba’s squad in the 2011 Pan-American Games and the qualification portion prior to the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Memphis 901 FC Holding Open Tryouts

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC is holding open tryouts for local and regional players on Sunday, Dec. 2 at the DeSoto County Soccer Association fields in Southaven, Miss.

Tryouts are open to players ages 18 and over, and the deadline to register is November 30 at 5:00 p.m. On the day of the tryouts, games will kick off at 10:00 a.m. and noon. All trialists will be evaluated by the Memphis 901 FC technical staff, including head coach Tim Mulqueen, and will have the opportunity to impress in one trial game.

This tryout is geared towards local and regional elite soccer players with aspirations to play at the professional level. Memphis 901 FC will hold a second tryout in January geared towards current professionals and elite-level college players. Players who excel at this December tryout will be invited back to the second tryout in January.

Memphis 901 FC Signs Three More Players

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC has signed three more players to its roster for its inaugural 2019 United Soccer League season, Sporting Director Andrew Bell and head coach Tim Mulqueen announced Tuesday, as midfielder Dan Metzger, defender Louis Bennett, and forward Luca Uccello are set to suit up in The Bluff City pending league and federation approval.

The trio joins midfielder Raul Gonzalez, defender Wes Charpie, and defender Josh Morton on the Memphis 901 FC roster so far.

“Coach Mulqueen has been working hard on identifying the right players for us as we continue to build the Memphis squad,” Bell said. “We’re very happy to add Dan, Luca, and Louis and are excited to see them contribute to our project.”

“All three of these guys bring something valuable to the table,” Mulqueen explained. “Metzger is a proven leader and winner, Uccello is a player with great playmaking ability who, at a young age, has great experience, and Bennett is very sound technically who can play multiple positions. As a son of a coach, he has a natural high soccer IQ.”

Metzger, a 2016 USL Cup champion with New York Red Bulls II, played three seasons with Red Bulls II before spending the 2018 campaign with Penn FC. He has played over 80 USL matches since entering the league in 2015 after being drafted 42nd overall in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft by D.C. United, and he made his MLS debut in 2017 for the New York Red Bulls. The Holmdel Township, N.J., native appeared in six playoff matches and scored three goals in his 2016 championship season, and prior to joining Memphis 901 FC he made 20 starts and scored a goal in his lone season with Penn FC. Metzger played his collegiate soccer at the University of Maryland, where he was a team captain.

Since signing his first professional contract with Cypriot team Anorthosis Famagusta FC in Aug. 2016 out of Marquette University, Bennett has played with MFK Vyškov in the 3rd Division of Czech Football and also the USL’s Swope Park Rangers. In addition, Bennett has previously trained with FC Cologne in Germany and AIK Stockholm in Sweden. His father, Louis, is the head coach at Marquette and played for the American Indoor Soccer Association’s Memphis Rogues from 1989-90 under head coach Toni Carbognani.

Uccello has spent the past four seasons with the USL’s Toronto FC II, scoring 10 goals in 77 appearances. The Markham, Ontario, Canada native has also made multiple international appearances for Canada and was nominated for the Canadian Men’s U-20 Player of the Year Award by the Canadian Soccer Association in 2016 and 2017. In Feb. 2017, Uccello was named to Canada’s U-20 World Cup qualifying roster for the 2017 CONCACAF U-20 Championship.

Memphis 901 FC Announces Trio of Signings

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Memphis 901 FC has signed its first three players for its inaugural 2019 United Soccer League season, Sporting Director Andrew Bell and head coach Tim Mulqueen announced today, with midfielder Raul Gonzalez, defender Wes Charpie, and defender Josh Morton becoming the first to don the club’s crest pending league and federation approval.

Season ticket holders can meet the players, plus Bell, and Mulqueen at an exclusive USL Cup Watch Party at AutoZone Park on Thursday, Nov. 8 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Season ticket holders will be treated to one free beer in addition to giveaways, autographs, and photo opportunities. “We’re very happy to welcome Raul, Wes, and Josh to our Club,” Bell said. “All three players bring unique qualities that we feel will help us as we build the squad in preparation for the start of the 2019 USL season next March. “All three players possess multiple years of professional experience that will serve us well as we begin our initial campaign in the USL,” Mulqueen said. “They have demonstrated consistent high-level performances at the professional level, and we’re excited to welcome them to the Memphis 901 FC family.”

Gonzalez played collegiate soccer at the University of Memphis and spent the previous two seasons with the USL’s Richmond Kickers. He made 47 starts for Richmond in 2017 and 2018 and scored five goals. Before signing with Richmond, the Ocean Springs, Miss., native made 65 appearances over four seasons with Memphis and tallied 13 goals and 13 assists. Gonzalez was a two-time all-conference honoree for the Tigers, and he was named to the All-Rookie Team as a freshman in 2013. His breakout season came as a junior in 2015, when he started all 17 matches, scored a team-high seven goals, and led Memphis with 16 points.

Charpie spent the 2018 season with Jacksonville Armada FC of the National Premier Soccer League after playing in the USL for Saint Louis FC in 2017 and Toronto FC II in 2015 and 2016. He was drafted 29th overall in the 2015 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by Toronto FC and signed with its USL affiliate, making 43 appearances in two seasons with Toronto FC II. In 2017, Charpie, who hails from Tarpon Springs, Fla., joined Saint Louis FC and made 19 appearances with two assists. He enjoyed an extensive youth and college career, training with the Aston Villa and Blackburn youth teams, before earning multiple all-league honors at the University of South Florida.

Morton, who scored the first goal in AutoZone Park history for Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the Sept. 1 “Soccer Showdown” exhibition match against the Colorado Rapids of MLS, made 27 starts and 32 appearances in his only season with Tulsa. He starred at the University of California, starting nearly every match and earning honorable mention all-conference honors as a senior, which led Morton to a fourth-round pick by the Chicago Fire in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft. The Wyandotte, Mich., native then signed with Tulsa two months later to begin his professional career.

“All three players possess multiple years of professional experience that will serve us well as we begin our initial campaign in the USL,” Mulqueen said. “They have demonstrated consistent high-level performances at the professional level, and we’re excited to welcome them to the Memphis 901 FC family.”

Gonzalez played collegiate soccer at the University of Memphis and spent the previous two seasons with the USL’s Richmond Kickers. He made 47 starts for Richmond in 2017 and 2018 and scored five goals. Before signing with Richmond, the Ocean Springs, Miss., native made 65 appearances over four seasons with Memphis and tallied 13 goals and 13 assists. Gonzalez was a two-time all-conference honoree for the Tigers, and he was named to the All-Rookie Team as a freshman in 2013. His breakout season came as a junior in 2015, when he started all 17 matches, scored a team-high seven goals, and led Memphis with 16 points.

Charpie spent the 2018 season with Jacksonville Armada FC of the National Premier Soccer League after playing in the USL for Saint Louis FC in 2017 and Toronto FC II in 2015 and 2016. He was drafted 29th overall in the 2015 Major League Soccer SuperDraft by Toronto FC and signed with its USL affiliate, making 43 appearances in two seasons with Toronto FC II. In 2017, Charpie, who hails from Tarpon Springs, Fla., joined Saint Louis FC and made 19 appearances with two assists. He enjoyed an extensive youth and college career, training with the Aston Villa and Blackburn youth teams, before earning multiple all-league honors at the University of South Florida.

Morton, who scored the first goal in AutoZone Park history for Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the Sept. 1 “Soccer Showdown” exhibition match against the Colorado Rapids of MLS, made 27 starts and 32 appearances in his only season with Tulsa. He starred at the University of California, starting nearly every match and earning honorable mention all-conference honors as a senior, which led Morton to a fourth-round pick by the Chicago Fire in the 2018 MLS SuperDraft. The Wyandotte, Mich., native then signed with Tulsa two months later to begin his professional career.

USL Unveils New Structure

TAMPA, Fla. – On a historic day for the evolution of soccer in North America, the United Soccer League has unveiled a new structure and brand identity for each of its top three leagues ahead of the 2019 season.

“Today’s announcement comes at the dawn of an exciting new era for our sport,” said USL CEO Alec Papadakis. “The USL has spent the past eight years transforming our league to meet the evolving needs of our team owners, players, coaches, fans and partners. We have established our place in the U.S. soccer landscape while blazing the trail for professional soccer’s future by introducing a new third division, completing the nation’s professional soccer structure.

“We are bringing three leagues under one central brand that will uniquely represent the USL’s vision for the future and give rise to local passion in new cities currently without professional soccer. The new brand and logos are inspiring and convey a new direction. They are innovative and modern and tell a story but more importantly, refuse to let others define us. The USL will now be modelled after a tried and respected international structure. One central brand, three leagues: USL Championship – the pinnacle of competition; USL League One– the foundation of professional soccer; and, USL League Two – the Path to Pro.

“We are repositioning the competition under MLS with a new strategy, new names and logos,” concluded Papadakis. “As we look to the future, the USL is ready to put its fingerprints on U.S. Soccer’s drive toward becoming the best in the world, and its pursuit of winning a FIFA Men’s World Cup.”

The new structure and branding will go into effect in advance of the 2019 season, at which point the USL will also unveil a modernized league website in order to showcase new, engaging digital content and help to better tell the organization’s story as it continues to push the limits of what is possible for professional soccer in North America.

Trinity Sports Holdings Takes Ownership of Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Trinity Sports Holdings, whose interests include Memphis 901 FC and the Memphis Redbirds, among others, has taken over ownership of Dagenham & Redbridge Football Club in England’s National League.

Under the newly-created Victoria Road Football, LLC, Principal Owner Peter B. Freund, President Craig Unger, and soccer legend Tim Howard will pilot the club, which is based in East London, England. The trio is coming off the successful launch of Memphis 901 FC, the Division II club based at AutoZone Park in Downtown Memphis.

Freund and Unger bring years of experience operating professional sports franchises throughout North America, and Howard lends expansive knowledge of English football from his 13 years playing in the English Premier League for Manchester United and Everton and is one of the most famous soccer players in American history.

“September has been a thrilling month, as we unveiled Memphis 901 FC in front of a sellout crowd in Downtown Memphis, continued the Redbirds’ run towards another potential Pacific Coast League championship, and have now completed the acquisition of Dagenham & Redbridge FC,” Freund said. “As Trinity Sports Holdings continues to grow, we are strengthening our commitment to owning and operating professional sports franchises both here and abroad. The opportunity to acquire a storied club like the Daggers and plant a flag in the English Football system is an exciting next step for all of us.”

“Connecting the City of Memphis, through Memphis 901 FC and the Memphis Redbirds, with the City of London in this way is huge for our entire region,” Unger said. “In addition to Memphis Tourism having representatives in the U.K., to have these world-renowned cities now linked through sports, specifically soccer, is a game-changer, and will make the distance ‘across the Pond’ seem significantly shorter.”

In addition to the Redbirds and Memphis 901 FC, Trinity Sports Holdings also has stakes in Major League Baseball’s New York Yankees and Minor League Baseball’s Williamsport Crosscutters of the New York-Penn League and the Charleston RiverDogs of the South Atlantic League.

The new structure of the Dagenham & Redbridge board will see Freund as Executive Chairman of the Football Club, while Paul Gwinn J.P. will remain as Chairman. Steve Thompson will stay on as Managing Director, and the remaining Directors will be Unger, Dave Bennett and Mark Odams. Bennett and Thompson retain their minority holdings in the club, as does the Club’s Full Members company, Dagenham & Redbridge FC Ltd.

Dagenham & Redbridge FC, nicknamed the Daggers, was formed in 1992 following a merger of two clubs, Dagenham and Redbridge Forest. The club can trace its ancestry back to 1886, as Redbridge Forest was an amalgamation of the famous clubs Leytonstone FC and Walthamstow Avenue.

While currently competing in the fifth division of the English football system, the National League, the Daggers have competed as high as the third division in the English Football League’s League One and also spent almost a decade in the EFL’s League Two.

Dagenham & Redbridge plays its matches at 6,078-seat Victoria Road, known as Chigwell Construction Stadium for sponsorship purposes, and is currently managed by Peter Taylor. Taylor, a storied English player and former manager of the England National Team, has been engaged in soccer for over 40 years. He made David Beckham captain while with the National Team, and he also had two spells managing England’s under-21 club as well as numerous other clubs.

MEMPHIS, Tennessee – “901 Day” took on a whole new meaning at AutoZone Park, as Memphis 901 FC was unveiled as Downtown Memphis’ newest professional sports team at 9:01 a.m., before a sold-out crowd of 8,957 witnessed Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids taking down the United Soccer League’s Tulsa Roughnecks FC in a friendly, 3-2.

Memphian and Memphis 901 FC advisor Tim Howard was in goal for the Rapids, giving the crowd a chance to witness one of the greatest soccer players in American history. The match was tied at the half, before the Rapids got the winning goal just one minute into the second half.

The pre-match party. The supporters march. The goosebump-inducing ovation Howard got when stepping on the pitch. The first touch. The five goals. The hat trick by Memphis native and Colorado Rapids' forward Niki Jackson. Every chant, flag-wave, and smoke bomb. The full-time whistle. The post-match fireworks display.
