Memphis fell short in Tulsa 2-1 after giving up a stoppage-time goal at OneOK Field.
Tulsa got off to a hot start maintaining 67 percent of possession and tallying six shots in the first 30 minutes of play. The backline for Memphis, headed by Zach Carroll and Skylar Thomas, held strong in front of Brady Scott, blocking four shots and winning 55% percent of duals in the first half. Scott also had two saves in the first 45 minutes of play.
Outshot 8-4 in the first half and out possessed, Memphis headed into halftime tied 0-0.
Tulsa kept its foot on the gas in the second half with a solid chance on a left-footed shot by Jason Johnson in the 46th minute of play. Following a lull in the action without a single shot on goal from either side for 18 minutes, Memphis began to push forward becoming more aggressive in the final third of the pitch but couldn’t find the back of the net.
It was Tulsa who got on the board first with a back post header from Marlon off a cross from Jorge Corrales.
Just seven minutes later, Kyle Murphy scored the equalizer after taking on a defender to the end line in the right side of the box and pushing it past Tulsa keeper Sean Lewis. The goal by Murphy is his 11th of the season surpassing Brandon Allen for most goals in a single season by a Memphis 901 FC player. Murphy’s 11th goal also moved him into second for most individual goals this season in the USL Championship.
Following a couple of substitutions to the Memphis 901 FC defense. Tulsa’s Marlon found the back of the net again in the 90+2 minute of the match. The lead would hold for Tulsa as the club takes three points at home and moves into third place within the Central Division. Memphis currently sits in 7th as the team heads to Kansas City to take on Sporting KC II on Sunday.
