CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Memphis 901 FC suffered 3-1 loss to Chattanooga FC in round two of the US Open Cup. This is the second-ever all Tennessee clash in the US Open Cup Tournament.
Chattanooga got off to a quick start scoring within the first minute of the match, getting a through ball into the box, and sending the ball across the goal into the bottom left corner off the foot of Alex McGrath.
After the initial shock of the early goal, Memphis took control of the ball, holding possession and creating chances. Boyce took a shot from the top right of the 18-yard box, narrowly missing the back of the net as the ball bounced off the crossbar back into play in the 10th minute.
Jeremy Kelly got his first shot off at the top of the box in the 20th minute sending the ball straight to the keeper but keeping the pressure on the Chattanooga backline. Three minutes later Aaron Molloy serviced a ball into the box off a corner and a header from Phillip Goodrum hit the crossbar, tallying Memphis’ second near-miss of the match.
Although Memphis maintained control and possession, Chattanooga scored their second goal on a set piece. Drew Romig saved the first shot, however was unable to hold off an attempt from Travis Ward as the ball hit the back of the net in the 29th minute.
Memphis continued to push the ball forward, making good on an opportunity as Laurent Kissiedou laid the ball off to Patrick Seagrist. Seagrist one-timed a shot outside the top left side of the box into the right upper-90 of the goal in the 39th minute.
Chattanooga added another goal, scoring in the third minute of stoppage time as a through ball was sent deep into the box connecting with Taylor Gray as he pushed it just past Romig.
Memphis kept pressing, looking for opportunities. Seagrist took another chance from outside the box, the ball was deflected and Kissiedou took his one-touch shot, sending the ball wide left in the 51st minute.
Memphis narrowly missed the goal on their first two attempts before sending the ball over the crossbar in the 61st minute. Kissiedou headed the ball just wide off a Kelly cross in the 74th minute.
Memphis continued to push the ball through the second half but was unable to capitalize on opportunities. Chattanooga’s defense held strong, not allowing any easy shots, maintaining a clean sheet in the second half.
