MEMPHIS, Tennessee – Still very much in the mix for a playoff spot in its inaugural season, Memphis 901 FC hosts Charlotte Independence tomorrow night at 7:00 in the season's penultimate regular-season home match at AutoZone Park.
Two spots remain unclaimed in the playoff picture and are currently held by Saint Louis FC (9th, 42 pts) and Birmingham Legion FC (10th, 40 pts). Charleston Battery also has 40 points but trails Birmingham based on the first tiebreaker, which is win total. With wins in each of its final three matches of the season, 901 FC would finish with 43 points. Charleston also has three matches left to play this regular season, including one against Memphis, and Saint Louis and Birmingham each have two to play.
Should 901 FC secure a playoff spot, it would become just the third club in the last three seasons to make the postseason in its inaugural year (Nashville SC, 2018; Reno 1868 FC, 2017).
Entering tomorrow, Memphis has won five of its last seven matches to rise from 17th place prior to the Aug. 28 match at Atlanta United 2 to its current position knocking on the door of the playoffs. 901 FC is coming off a 3-0 defeat at Indy Eleven last Saturday night, which was Indy's 24th-straight unbeaten outing at home.
Memphis and Charlotte played earlier this season in Charlotte, which was a 1-0 win for the home side via a 74th-minute goal.
Following tomorrow’s match, 901 FC gears up for a two-match week to finish the regular season. Memphis heads to Charleston Wednesday night at 6:30 (CT) for a make-up match for a contest postponed twice, before closing the regular season at home next Saturday, Oct. 19, against two-time defending USL Cup champions Louisville City FC. Kickoff for the regular-season finale at AutoZone Park is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
